Holistic Health.  What are the images you associate with this booming area of natural health care?  Organic food? Herbs?  Yoga?
Here in Upper East Tennessee, these were once thought of as “something weird practiced by hippie-like people in California”!
Now natural and holistic health care is part of what is known as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), and is often practiced alongside conventional western medicine.  Drs. Andrew Weil, Stephen Sinatra, and Mehmet Oz are some well-known physicians who use CAM in their practices. CAM encompasses a wide range of professional practitioners such as massage therapists, aromatherapists, acupuncturists, herbalists, homeopaths, and nutritional consultants.  What’s more exciting is that these professionals can now be found in the Tri-Cities area, all dedicated to considering the health of the whole person; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  Some are licensed practitioners that may hold traditional medical degrees as well, while others are specifically educated and certified in their areas of expertise.
Because holistic health focuses on returning the whole person to a state of balance, many practitioners like myself, will address a wide variety of topics during a consultation.  This special attention to the individual’s unique needs is one of the things that attracts people to holistic health.  Many are also increasingly alarmed over the tremendous financial consequences of poor health, and want to take the steps necessary to protect their good health now and as they age.  Some realize that there must be a better way than depending on pills to treat their every ill. Most simply want to begin doing everything they can to ensure the best health possible for themselves and their families.
Whether you want to avoid disease, recover your health after a major illness, or simply feel better about yourself, a holistic practitioner can guide you along.
In my newsletters, I will include a page written by a local alternative health provider.  Please look for their page.  In addition, I will be adding to my list of local CAM providers, and will make them available to you.

Principles of Holistic Health

    Consider the whole person:

    • The Physical
    • The Mental
    • The Emotional
    • The Spiritual
    • The Social
    • Their Environment

Acknowledge that the body heals itself.

Identify the causes of poor health, illness, and disease.

Remove harmful elements.

Use natural, gentle, and harmless healing modalities.

Provide what the body requires to heal, and support its efforts.

Prevent illness by optimizing health.

Educate, support, and encourage self-knowledge and responsibility.
